Grangeville Cemetery District’s Dump Truck Solution: Ingenuity and Collaboration in Idaho

How Grangeville Cemetery District and Cobalt Truck Equipment Delivered for a Unique Community Need.

Written by Gregg Marshall | GMU Account Manager

In the heart of Idaho, nestled in the tranquil town of Grangeville, the Grangeville Cemetery District faced a challenge both practical and particular: the need for a new dump truck that could deftly navigate the narrow pathways between burial plots, while still providing the robust carrying capacity required for cemetery operations.

What followed was an exemplary story of collaboration, ingenuity, and local expertise—showcasing how two Idaho entities, the Grangeville Cemetery District and Cobalt Truck Equipment, worked together to overcome a host of technical hurdles and deliver a solution tailored perfectly to their community’s needs.

THE CHALLENGE: Meeting Specific Cemetery Requirements

Cemeteries present unique logistical challenges. The Grangeville Cemetery District, responsible for the respectful maintenance and operation of burial grounds in and around Grangeville, found their existing equipment lacking in both efficiency and compliance with spatial constraints. The narrow plots—each carefully measured and laid out—meant that any vehicle traversing the cemetery’s pathways had to be no wider than a single rear wheel truck. Yet, the district could not compromise on carrying capacity. Heavy loads, from soil and gravel to seasonal snow, required a vehicle with the muscles of a true 1-ton truck.

In the world of trucks, such requirements are rare and, by their nature, highly specific. Most dump trucks with a 1-ton rating come equipped with dual rear wheels, which increase carrying capacity but also the width—rendering them unsuitable for the cemetery’s needs. This left the Grangeville Cemetery District searching for a singular solution: a dump truck with single rear wheels that could still boast the payload of its beefier, dual-wheeled counterparts.

SEEKING SOLUTIONS: Selecting the Right Partners

Knowing the constraints, the district began researching not just vehicles, but manufacturers and upfitters capable of engineering a truck that would tick every box. After careful consideration, they selected a Chevrolet 3500 chassis—known for its reliability and, crucially, its availability in single rear wheel configurations. The model they chose was equipped with an integrated factory PTO (Power Take-Off) system, which would be instrumental in powering any future dump bed and hoist system.

But simply buying a chassis was only the first step. The real challenge lay ahead: configuring that truck to serve as a durable, maneuverable, and multi-functional dump truck. For this, Grangeville Cemetery District turned to the expertise of Cobalt Truck Equipment—a leader in custom truck upfits whose reputation for quality and creative problem-solving preceded them.

ENGINEERING INGENUITY: Cobalt Truck Equipment

Cobalt Truck Equipment was handed a tall order: craft a dump truck that achieved maximum load capacity on a single rear wheel chassis, integrated seamlessly with the Chevrolet 3500’s factory PTO system, and was versatile enough to accommodate the district’s snow removal operations.

The solution began with the dump bed itself. Rather than default to the heavier steel beds typically found on municipal dump trucks, Cobalt opted for a custom aluminum dump bed manufactured by Tafco. Aluminum offered several advantages: it was significantly lighter than steel, which maximized payload capacity without exceeding the limitations imposed by the single rear wheels. The Tafco bed was not just light, but also cleverly designed, featuring fold-down rear and side panels. These provided enhanced accessibility for loading and unloading materials, while also allowing the bed to accommodate larger, awkwardly shaped loads—a feature that quickly proved invaluable for cemetery maintenance crews.

At the heart of the dumping mechanism was a Scott hoist, chosen for its robust construction and compatibility with the integrated PTO system of the Chevrolet 3500. The hoist’s design required careful adaptation; Cobalt’s team had to modify mounting points and interface components so the hoist and bed would fit securely to the GM frame, ensuring both safety and efficiency. Precision engineering and extensive testing were necessary to guarantee that the system would perform reliably under the varied demands of cemetery work.

CUSTOM FEATURES: Integrating Existing Equipment

Grangeville Cemetery District’s requirements did not end with dump functionality. Idaho winters can be unforgiving, and snow removal is a perennial concern. Rather than purchase new equipment, the district wanted to leverage their existing SnowDogg snowplow—a trusted workhorse with years of dependable service. Integrating this snowplow with the new truck required yet another layer of customization.

Cobalt Truck Equipment installed an updated mounting kit for the SnowDogg plow, ensuring seamless compatibility with the Chevrolet 3500 chassis and its new upfit. The result was a dump truck that could transform with the seasons: hauling soil and gravel in the warmer months, and clearing snow in the winter, all without missing a beat.

DELIVERY & SATISFACTION: A Model for Community Collaboration

When the Grangeville Cemetery District finally took delivery of their custom upfit dump truck, the response was one of genuine delight. The truck had been built to exacting specifications, with every detail—from the width of its wheels to the integration of its snowplow—thoughtfully addressed. The aluminum Tafco dump bed, with its fold-down sides and rear, offered both strength and versatility, while the Scott hoist performed with smooth, quiet, dependable power.

The district’s staff praised the quality of workmanship and the professionalism shown by Cobalt Truck Equipment throughout the process. The truck’s performance quickly validated their enthusiasm; cemetery crews found it easy to maneuver along the narrow plots, while its robust carrying capacity exceeded expectations. The ability to convert the truck for snow removal further enhanced its value, allowing the district to maximize their investment and better serve the community.

REFLECTIONS: Lessons in Problem-Solving & Partnership

The success of this project is more than a story about a truck. It is a testament to the power of collaboration, local expertise, and creative engineering. By clearly defining their needs and partnering with specialists willing to innovate, the Grangeville Cemetery District was able to secure a solution that perfectly fit their operational environment- avoiding costly compromises and ensuring safe, efficient service for years to come.

For Cobalt Truck Equipment, the project underscored the importance of listening carefully to client needs and drawing upon a broad palette of products, materials, and design approaches. Their willingness to modify and adapt existing products—rather than force a one-size-fits-all solution—stands as a model for other upfitters and service providers across Idaho and beyond.

In summary, the story of the Grangeville Cemetery District’s dump truck is a prime example of how local entities can rise to meet unique challenges through partnership, ingenuity, and a shared commitment to quality. The result is not just a truck, but a tool that will serve the community for years, a symbol of thoughtful stewardship, and a showcase for Idaho know-how at its best.
